Espresso Roast vs. Medium Roast: Which Coffee Is Right for You?

Choosing between an espresso roast and a medium roast can feel overwhelming — especially when both smell incredible. The good news? Once you understand what separates them, the choice becomes easy. Here's everything you need to know.

What Is a Roast Level?

Every coffee bean starts green. Roasting transforms it — developing the sugars, oils, and aromatic compounds that give your cup its character. The longer and hotter the roast, the darker the bean. Roast level doesn't just change colour; it fundamentally shifts flavour, body, and best brewing method.

Medium Roast: Balanced, Bright & Versatile

A medium roast hits the sweet spot between the natural origin flavours of the bean and the deeper, caramelised notes that come with longer roasting. Expect:

  • Flavour: Smooth, balanced, with subtle sweetness and mild acidity
  • Body: Medium — not too heavy, not too light
  • Best brewed as: Drip/filter coffee, plunger (French press), or pour-over
  • Caffeine: Slightly higher than darker roasts (lighter roasts retain more caffeine)

Our Jaques 1Kg Medium Roast – Whole Beans and 1Kg Medium Roast – Medium Grind are perfect if you love a classic, approachable cup with nuance.

Espresso Roast: Bold, Rich & Intense

An espresso roast is taken further into the roast cycle, producing a darker bean with deeper, more developed flavour. Expect:

  • Flavour: Rich, bold, chocolatey — lower acidity, more bitterness
  • Body: Full and heavy — ideal for cutting through milk
  • Best brewed as: Espresso machine, stovetop moka pot, or AeroPress
  • Caffeine: Slightly lower per bean weight (but espresso's concentrated extraction means a strong cup)

Our Jaques 1Kg Espresso Roast – Espresso Grind is ground specifically for espresso machines, while the 1Kg Espresso Roast – Whole Beans gives you the flexibility to grind fresh for any method.

Which Should You Choose?

Medium Roast Espresso Roast
